frankie my dear, i don't give a damn

Friday, January 27 by Kev

chaka khan - ain't nobody (frankie knuckles hallucinogenic dub) (mp3)

one of my first ever clubbing jaunts was to see frankie knuckles in manchester, so he'll always hold a special reverance for me. a true forefather of the house scene, he's produced enough quality tracks and remixes to easily fill a full night of aural bliss, and this is just one of his many high points.

sorry for the brevity, but it's been a bit of a mad week. hopefully the quality of the music should make up my obvious lack of regular incoherent meandering ...

tellier what though ...

Monday, January 23 by Kev

sebastien tellier - broadway (chicken lips dub) (mp3)

it's been almost 2 years since sebastien tellier's "beyond all strategies" 12" fell so gracefully into our lives, and after a whole load of mostly pointless remixes, re-jigs and re-edits of the awe-inspiring and expletetive-defying "la ritournelle" (what exactly did mr dan do with that magic wand of his anyway?) we are finally presented with something new. well, new in the sense that this isn't that same track repackaged again (this was previously found on his last lp "politics") and is (very strangely) a call to arms for starship troopers' rico to come and save us all. on a chance meeting with sebastien late last year i asked how the new album was sounding, and he simply replied "people liked la ritournelle, so it's a lot like that". i can only hope that's true. whilst "broadway" is't as life-changing as the aformentioned masterpiece (a fact that will probably hold true with most records released this decade), this chicken lips nine minute dub takes the track in a completely new direction, echoing both their emperor machine and white light circus side projects. it's out on 6th feb on lucky number.

gnarls barkely - untitled 03 (aac)

gnarls barkely - untitled 04 (aac)

gnarls barkely - untitled 05 (aac)

here's the remaining tracks from the gnarls barkley sampler i posted earlier in the week. i originally wasn't going to post these, as i only wanted to put up a few tracks, assumed it would have been picked up by someone else by now and also didn't think that these three were as good as the others, but after the response i received it would be rude of me to keep these for myself. for me the production on these tracks conjours up images of andre 3000, sounding very unique and leftfield whilst still within the boundaries of hip-hop, but only just. the only thin negative is that i'm finding it increasingly hard to wait patiently for the album now!

apologies for the yousendit action, but my bandwidth was nixed after the last gnarly post (hence the removal of the old tracks, altough they are still available elsewhere).

more norway!?!

Tuesday, January 17 by Kev

lindstrom - "another station" (mp3)

i'm seriously contemplating renaming this blog "we love norway", such is our fascination with music from the land of the everlasting sunset. i don't really know how lindstrom manages to put out such a volume of work with such unbelievable consistency - it's obvious that he has been "overly influenced" by certain old tracks (see here), but to still come up with a defining sound so original even when it's apparent that he's "borrowing" other artists melodies and chord progressions really is something.

this is hans-peter at his most overtly balearic, with a beautiful piano-led introduction that kicks into an almighty eight minute monster. there are a few limited promos of this (along with a tood terje remix on the flip) for sale here, which i'd advise picking up quickly.

and just for anyone who hasn't yet seen the funniest thing saturday night live have done in a long time, go check lazy sunday now!

gnarly?

Saturday, January 14 by Kev

gnarls barkely - untitled 01 (aac)

gnarls barkely - untitled 02 (aac)

i've just been handed a package (read : a zipped yousendit file) which purports to contain new material from the latest super hip-hop collaboration gnarls barkley. it's six tracks, one of which is the all-conquering "crazy", and as far as i can tell it seems pretty legit. here's two of them so you can decide for yourself.

i can't find any mention of this anywhere on the blogosphere, so please express any opinions, comments, outrage, love, doubt or disgust below ...

if it ain't broken then don't fix it

status iv - you ain't really down (jazzanova's hey baby remix) (mp3)

we'll continue the recurring theme of playing records that we like by posting a track that's received a rapturous reception down at bff on a few occasions now. it's not a track that does a lot, but what it does do is absolutely beyond compare, with jazzanova taking a 20 year old track from status iv and applying their trademark tech-jazz template.

mark has had a run-in with the german nu-jazz pioneers a while back, who were lovely enough to send him a replacement cardboard sleeve for his "remixes 1997-2000" (which contains, amongst other bombs, their remixes of ian pooley's "what's my number" and mj cole's "sincere"). he emailed them a true-life sob-story of how his mum threw it in the bin one afternoon when she was cleaning up his room and bless them, they even threw in some free sonar kollektiv cd's too!

so in summary - best foot forward ♥s jazzanova!

eurodans to the beat

Wednesday, January 11 by Kev

todd terje - eurodans (mp3)

firstly, we've finally gotten round to getting our own domain and webspace sorted, so we've banished the horrible yousendit links and hopefully we find you all with us still. right, and now that's done ...

i doubt i'd be wrong in estimating that about 75% of the top quality nu-disco that has come out in the past 12 months has come from norway, and if so, then 75% of that has come from three distinct nordic countrymen. the first two, lindstrom and prins thomas, have already been discussed at length within these pages (just to reiterate for those late to the show - we love them quite a lot) so today we'd like to point you in the direction of the third amigo, mr. todd terje. if you've been keeping an eye on the scando-cosmic scene you've no doubt seen his name mentioned, and there's not a lot of places around these parts that you could have avoided his most-excellent michael jackson re-edit on gamm a while back. (geez, i've just realised that we link discogs an awful lot!)

this track is guaranteed dancefloor destroying dynamite, that has been almost played to death down at our gaff, and to a rapturous reception everytime. rumour has it that this track was only made after a friend asked terje to produce the cheesiest dance track he could, and the result was so good that it had to be released. terje is on fire at the moment, so i'd recommend checking out some of his stuff here.

let me see your tigerstripes

Monday, January 9 by Kev

felix - tigerstripes (mp3)

when one of the world's greatest ever djs decided to make music with a classically trained cellist you could have been certain that the result would be something to prick up even the most tired of 70s ears. so after nicky siano brought arthur russell to the gallery (where he was the resident dj), and after arthur then fell in love with the disco sound, they then hooked up, often producing some of disco's most sublime leftfield moments including both "kiss me again" and "go bang" as dinosaur / dinosaur l. "tigerstripes" is another of their offerings, taken from the forthcoming "new york noise vol. 2" compilation on london's consistently brilliant soul jazz records. although containing what are possibly the worst lyrics in the history of new york disco, this becomes almost irrelevant when presented with the the perfect percussion and layers of kaleidoscopic instrumentation. just try and sit still to this!

pick the compilation up next monday from the usual suspects, or if you must, pre-order from here. and if you like this, then now would be as good a time as any to tempt you into buying what must be one of the funkiest disco compilations in recent years, "nicky siano's the gallery", also on soul jazz records.

down the m52 and turn left on to the m83...

m83 - run into flowers (midnight fuck remix by jackson)

its been a while since i graced these here pages with a post.....so here's a quick one......i've had this record for a couple of years now, first hearing it on one of those compilations from the super cool parisian shop, colette.........

the usual stuff by m83 is not really my cup of (fruity) tea, its a bit too noisy for my delicate 'lugs', but this remix by jackson on the run into flowers ep is just flippin' awesome..........if you like what your hearing, you might still be able to buy from gooom records in france......……happy 2006
