let me see your tigerstripes

felix - tigerstripes (mp3)

when one of the world's greatest ever djs decided to make music with a classically trained cellist you could have been certain that the result would be something to prick up even the most tired of 70s ears. so after nicky siano brought arthur russell to the gallery (where he was the resident dj), and after arthur then fell in love with the disco sound, they then hooked up, often producing some of disco's most sublime leftfield moments including both "kiss me again" and "go bang" as dinosaur / dinosaur l. "tigerstripes" is another of their offerings, taken from the forthcoming "new york noise vol. 2" compilation on london's consistently brilliant soul jazz records. although containing what are possibly the worst lyrics in the history of new york disco, this becomes almost irrelevant when presented with the the perfect percussion and layers of kaleidoscopic instrumentation. just try and sit still to this!

pick the compilation up next monday from the usual suspects, or if you must, pre-order from here. and if you like this, then now would be as good a time as any to tempt you into buying what must be one of the funkiest disco compilations in recent years, "nicky siano's the gallery", also on soul jazz records.
