beck to the future

beck - broken drum (boards of canada remix) (mp3)

beck - clap hands (mp3)

with full details of the beck remix album now released, and seeing as there's a track from guero played almost every saturday night (with "missing" and "girl" being particular favourites) i thought it's as good a time as ever to post these remixes. both of these will show up on "guerolito" when it drops in december, but now's as good a time as ever to share them.

i've gotta say, whilst the new boards of canada album left me quite cold, i'm really loving this remix right now. there's a real depth of emotion to it which was lacking in the identikit lackadaisical production of "the campfire headphase". beck's own "clap hands" was featured on the limited edition of the cd, and it's another winner.

if anyone has any idea what any of the other remixes sound like (especially the superthriller and el-p tracks) i'd be more than interested to hear about it below.

he's the mann - and everybody knows it

moodymann - tribute (mp3)

moodymann - amerika (mp3)

norma jean bell - i'm the baddest bitch (moodymann remix) (mp3)

a triple shot of dirty detroit house from the inimitable kenny dixon jr. i'm surprised this blog is over a month old and there's yet to be a mention of one of house music's most elusive and unique producers, but i'm aiming to rectify that today with some mp3 overkill. taking cue from 70's soul, detroit techno and old blaxploitation movies, moodymann has crafted a sound which is constantly imitated but never bettered. it really wasn't difficult to pick three outstanding tracks from his back catalogue, and the first two really allow his influences to shine through, with samples from marvin gaye and gil scott-heron allowing moodymann to reflect on the rich history of american black music. the third track is moodymann in u.s. garage dancefloor mode, with his saxophone specialist norma jean bell, working together in order to create an absolute classic (which i originally thought was "too girly" when i first heard it, but i was soon to be proved wrong ...)

although the kdj "live" experience earlier in the year was a bit of a let down, it's a real mistake to ever write the man off, and all of his productions past, present and future are essential to any house collection.

deep dark house from the motor city, pick up most of his available back catalogue on cd or vinyl here. and if you like to put yourself through anguish, go see what you can't get over at discogs.

(its cosmic) in the air tonight

phil collins - in the air tonight (extended version) (mp3)

for those of you who know him, you might be mistaken for thinking this is a picture of my good friend kev, unfortunately you would be wrong………although they are almost identical in facial hair adornment, it is in fact, a young phil collins…...

the reason for the genesis man gracing our pages is because i thought id share with you my two best record buys of last week……..one of them being a 50p find in my local help the aged ‘boutique’ and the other being a japanese import that cost me an arm and two legs…..

the first is the extended version of phil collins – in the air tonight, which (in a totally un-ironic way) is a frickin’ great tune with a hypnotic bassline and lovely piano interludes…………….......apparently, said tune, was featured regularly on the miami vice show back in the early 80’s, which, co-incidentally, had a cameo appearance from mr collins, where he played a nasty, good for nothing crook called ‘phil the shill’……..completely useless information i know, but a question on such a subject is bound to pop up on your local pub quiz sooner or later…....

port of notes - walk through happiness (lindstrom remix) (mp3)

the second track on crue-l records is titled ‘walk through happiness’ and is a 11min remix of slo-mo cosmic action from everybody’s favourite, hans-peter lindstrom……………the original version done by port of notes is on the b-side, and all though its a pleasant little tune in its own rights, its lindstroms epic remix which is the winner here, enjoy.....and if you like, dig deep and buy

better than average after all?

daft punk - human after all (emperor machine version) (mp3)

i just got hold of this today, and it's a killer doublepack. i was undecided whether to post this or the juan maclean version, but i'll leave the latter for james at headphone sex to put up as soon as he gets hold of it, as it's a future rave classic. this version is from andy meecham, aka one half (or now one third after steve kotey's recent inclusion) of the most-excellent chicken lips, under his cosmic emperor machine guise. previous emperor machine releases have successfully managed to intergrate the dancefloor friendliness of the chicken lips nu-disco sound alongside the obvious krautrock influences stemming from andy's adoration of seventies experimentalists can, and this is no exception. as soon as it hits 4 and a half minutes, and that breakdown kicks in you can imagine any dancefloor erupting.

if you're super quick you might still be able to pick one of these up at piccadilly records now, so all is left for me to do is applaud the ability to turn a track from an unplayable album into a 6 minute bomb which i can't wait to drop this saturday night. proof that you can polish a turd? i'll let you decide.

nancy dupree with a group of rochester, ny youngsters- james brown (mp3)

i know nothing about this track apart from that it features on a rather excellent new koushik mix cd entitled "in the middle of the night", which you can buy here. i've googled all i can and can find nothing apart from what you can hear in the track it's a kid's choir, singing (off-key) a self-penned song about the king of soul and his humble beginnings. and, of course, i think it's fantastic.

edit: thanks to darren in the comments for pointing me in the direction of where to buy the whole album, i'm just about to order it now.

and if you're wondering what the above picture relates to, as i write this pete fowler is currently scrawling all over the walls at common, and he'll hopefully be staying afterwards and playing with me and mark. you should expect a few leftfield numbers, which you should have heard from his new monsterism compilation.

what a wicked thing to do

business man - dubby games (mp3)

whilst a more cynical reader may construe this post as being nothing more than a reason to show us all another image of the delectable helena christensen, they would in fact be wrong (well, not 100% right at least). the real reason we gather here today is to share what must be my favourite track of the moment, a remake of chris issak's wicked game, originally found on 1989's heart shaped world.

this version comes from the guys behind the rather excellennt denmark based music for dreams label, which is more affectionately known as "blomhoj's beats" around these parts. mark's been singing the praises of these danish wonderkids for a while now, and i'm glad to say i'm finally coming around.

if you've got any sense, you'll want to dust down your wallet and pick it up right now.

slaves to the rhythm

blonde redhead - in particular (radio slave remix) (mp3)

radio slave first came to prominence back in late 2001/early 2002 with various white label remixes of big tracks of the time - kylie's "can't get you out of my head" and nelly's "hot in herre" being two fine examples. after a healthy underground gestation period people began to catch on to this fantastic london based two-piece, and their popularity dramatically increased in 2003 after a fantastic essential mix which captured the party atmosphere dj style that was becoming popular at the time, dropping electro tracks next to pop hits right alongside hip-hop monsters, all in their own inimitable style.

this track is taken from their radio slave showreel which appeared at the miami music conference last year, which included new productions alongside various remixes (including the quickly-bootlegged carl craig "darkness" remix, which led mr c2c4 to remix the track himself!). the 2 x cd showreel is now going for some pretty pennies on ebay, and it's well worth it.

now split and handling their own projects (with matt edwards planning a few more releases from his superlative-defying quiet village project and slow-mo disco alias rekid) it can only be hoped that future productions can keep up the high levels of originality and quality seen in their early work.

and if there's anyone still reading this sorry about the lack of an update for a while, but moonboots was really really really good, and we've been recovering ever since (and i think mark's bank balance has taken a bit of a hammering from his ebay escapades to buy up all the rare records he spotted in moon's box).

oh and finally, the delia gonzales and gavin russon album is out today on dfa. buy it now, because it could quite possibly be the best dfa longplayer you buy all year (and yes, that includes lcd soundystem and juan maclean).
