cedric im brooks & the light of saba - africa (mp3)
everyone playing records out regularly has few 12"s that never leave the box - sure fire hits that can't fail to dissapoint, and today i present you with one of my saturday night staple selections from cedric im brooks. this comes from the ever-excellent london-based honest jons stable (purportedly set-up with help from one damon albarn), and riffs around a 10 minute disco-tinged beat, coupled with a funky as hell guitar lick and some serious horns which defies any sort of pigeonholing - you ever try filing something under calyspojazzrootsreggaediscoafrobeat before?

dan electro - down is the power
when this was released back at the turn of the century the immediate comparison made was that of french moodymann, and with the repetitive beats, full organ sounds, and the obligatory preacher sample you can see why. This is one of those records that when played can guarantee at least one person coming up to you with a "what the hell is ..." look on their face. part of his "better ep", on rodeo gay - a stone cold classic, and one you might have missed.

zsa zsa "la boum" - something scary (mp3)
belgian acid flashback from 1988, with a major leaning towards the new beat sound, released on complete kaos records (home to lords of acid's awe-inspiring "i sit on acid"). an eerie vocal sample ("something grabbed me ... and smothered me"), terrifyingly dark tone and a hard-hitting 303 line perfect for 4am on a saturday night. what more could you want?
